VISTA Summer Associate: Farm to School

Farm to School programs in Sedro-Woolley and Concrete, WA are key initiatives of the Healthy Eating focus area at United General District 304. By providing access to affordable, nutritious foods and encouraging patterns of eating that sustain wellbeing, we help alleviate the effects of poverty and build a healthier community. With seven school gardens, and partnerships with multiple local organizations serving youth and adults, Farm to School also offers experiential learning, nutrition education, and skill-building activities related to health promotion year-round. During the peak summer growing season, there are abundant opportunities to plant, tend, harvest, and distribute items from the school gardens, and engage community volunteers in the process. Farm to School, and other Healthy Eating programs, also prioritize outreach and community-building as part of their summer activities, increasing local capacity for programming that benefits youth, families, schools, farmers, and the broader community. United General District 304 is a public hospital district in Skagit County, Washington with over 50 programs promoting health and wellbeing at every stage of life. Located in scenic Sedro-Woolley, the gateway to the North Cascades, United General District 304 is a dynamic organization with an over 20-year history of connecting people and communities with innovative and best-practice programs that help people stay active, connected, and thriving.
