The Saint Louis University Good Neighborhood Initiative will develop a partnership and advising model for 3 student-led programs; Campus Kitchen, Billiken Bounty, and Billiken 2 Billiken. This project supports individuals who are food insecure: specifically individuals who live independently in homes across the street from SLU’s campus, as well as those who live in nearby emergency shelters and transitional housing. Campus Kitchen addresses food justice issues by reducing food waste and providing meals to those who are hungry. The mission of Billiken Bounty is to provide a sustainable on-campus resource to help alleviate food insecurity amount SLU students. Billiken 2 Billiken is an on-campus resale store that sells gently used items to students at affordable prices. This program reduces waste by collecting items no longer needed by students at move out and offering them to new/returning students the following year. Proceed from sales are then donated to other student initiatives that reduce economic hardship.

Member Duties : The Center for Social Action at Saint Louis University (SLU) encourages personal and social responsibility by transforming community volunteers into effective servant leaders and advocates for social change. The primary responsibility of the VISTA Summer Associate would be to build capacity in Campus Kitchen. Campus Kitchen Saint Louis University (CKSLU) has been a part of SLU since 2001 and is a student-led volunteer organization dedicated to fighting for food security in and around the neighborhood. Campus Kitchen participants have opportunities to investigate and promote various food security initiatives and form meaningful personal relationships with those they serve.The efforts of Campus Kitchen volunteers feed about 600 individuals each week. A Summer Associate will support the efforts of the initiatives described above.
