Summer Associate - MCNCE Summer Academy Program Mentor

Since 1966, TRIO Upward Bound at the University of Montana has empowered first-generation, low-income, and rural students in the Blackfeet Nation and Missoula to succeed in high school and prepare for college. With some students on track to be the first in their family to graduate from high school, this program builds students’ confidence that they can succeed in college and create a brighter future for their family and community. Our 6-week Summer Academy is a simulation of the college experience at UM, where students live in a residence hall, take classes to prepare for the upcoming school year, and engage in a variety of experiential learning activities. All Upward Bound programming is completely free for all participating students. The goal of the project is to alleviate poverty by providing low-income and potential first-generation college students with academic tutoring, mentorship, counseling, and college prep (e.g., SAT/ACT prep, financial aid assistance) to ensure high school graduation and college enrollment. By offering a "hand up" rather than a handout, it increases long-term economic mobility and breaks intergenerational poverty. Summer Academy is a powerful experience and students talk about how they now see themselves going on to college! Students join us from the Blackfeet Nation (Browning and Heart Butte) and Missoula. This academic support will help build the foundational building blocks for later successes both academically and professionally. Montana Campus Network for Civic Engagement (MCNCE) serves as the intermediary for this project. MCNCE is a coalition of colleges and universities dedicated to fostering civic engagement, service learning, and volunteerism across Montana. Led by CEOs from participating institutions, MCNCE works to improve community life and educate students on civic and social responsibility, preparing them to be thoughtful, compassionate, and engaged leaders.
