Summer Associate - MCNCE Youth Activity Coordinator

The Soft Landing Missoula (SLM) youth program aims to create opportunities for success, emotional & physical wellbeing, and social engagement for refugee and immigrant youth in Missoula, Montana. By developing & offering a range of services, SLM aims to create a community space where youth have access to academic, social, and recreational opportunities that support positive social determinants of health. SLM offers after school academic mentoring, college access support, and summer programming as well as social and recreational opportunities for elementary, middle, high school, and college refugee students. This program mitigates future poverty by preventing summer learning loss and providing academic programming, college readiness support, and social/recreational activities to overcome systemic barriers and foster long-term stability and success into adulthood. In the short term, the project provides immediate relief by connecting families to essential resources like the SLM food pantry and free room in our Community Center, reducing the financial burden of basic needs. In the long term, it breaks the cycle of poverty by providing youth with academic engagement, English language skills, and a sense of belonging and confidence to support long-term future success. The VISTA Summer Associates will support summer programming through direct service activities including assisting academic programming, connecting students to the community, providing academic and career mentorship, and facilitating social and recreational programs. Montana Campus Network for Civic Engagement (MCNCE) serves as the intermediary for this project. MCNCE is a coalition of colleges and universities dedicated to fostering civic engagement, service learning, and volunteerism across Montana. Led by CEOs from participating institutions, MCNCE works to improve community life and educate students on civic and social responsibility, preparing them to be thoughtful, compassionate, and engaged leaders.

Member Duties : Members will support the facilitation of youth activities to combat summer learning loss and promote community integration. The summer program offers a diverse range of activities, including Science Outdoors, English Class, GIRLS! empowerment group, pick up soccer, Passport Missoula mentorship, and college and career readiness. Through providing engaging programming, familiarizing participants with the Missoula community, and providing space for connection and friendships, members will take on specialized roles in programming while also serving as an access point to Community Center resources. Beyond direct programming, members help ensure youth participants can access the Soft Landing food pantry and donated goods, helping to reduce barriers to education and basic needs. Through programming that combines academic support, social/recreational opportunities, and access to essential resources, members help create sustainable pathways toward future success and community connectedness.
