Healthy Harvest Corps Summer- Dayton

The Ohio Association of Foodbanks (OAF) represents Ohio's 12 Feeding America foodbanks and their 3,600 member hunger relief programs, serving food insecure Ohioans in all 88 counties. OAF will host 25 AmeriCorps members serving at 9 host sites throughout Ohio. Deploying AmeriCorps direct service members at local and regional hunger relief agencies will support a coordinated statewide effort to improve health by getting healthy food into the homes of food insecure Ohioans. Summer positions will focus on promoting fresh produce among youth populations. This position is located at The Foodbank, Inc in Dayton. The Foodbank believes that access to nutritious food is a basic human right and no one should go hungry. In FY 2024, we distributed over 18 million pounds of food through our network of partner agencies and other Foodbank programs. The Foodbank is a high-performing results-driven team that serves our community while having fun! Our urban garden boasts 40 raised beds, nutritious growing containers, multiple pollinator gardens, and on-site in-vessel composting facility to support our growing efforts and supplement our inventory with fresh, local produce. In the fall of 2021, The Foodbank opened a 6,000 square foot hydroponic greenhouse that is capable of producing 80,000 plants and expands our growing season to year round. In summer 2026, our new community center at The Foodbank will open. This facility will allow us to provide wrap around services while also creating a new meeting space for local community members to use as we continue in our efforts to elimate hunger and its root causes.

Member Duties : This project delivers weekly healthy snack demonstrations for youth, featuring seasonal produce and hands-on nutrition education. Each session highlights a featured fruit or vegetable, explains its health benefits, and engages children in preparing and tasting fresh snacks—many grown and harvested from The Foodbank Urban Garden. Participation and feedback from youth and parents are documented to strengthen programming and increase engagement. Beyond meals, enrichment activities promote whole-child wellness through active games, storytelling, and lessons on composting and soil health, including live worm compost demonstrations. The initiative also maintains an on-site community garden and composting program while offering educational tours for schools, donors, and community members, emphasizing food as medicine, local food systems, and the connection between soil health and human health.
