PCCE-Manhattan University VISTA

The Jasper Community Builder Project strengthens Manhattan University’s ability to support at least three community projects focused on food security and educational access. The project also helps community partners build their capacity to recruit and manage volunteers so they can better meet community needs. The VISTA will work with students, faculty, and campus groups (including Campus Ministry Social Action, honors societies, and Athletics) to connect them with local partners such as The Friendly Fridge, Friends of Waldo, and Altagracia Faith and Justice Works. Manhattan University is a Lasallian Catholic institution in the Bronx, NY, committed to civic engagement and service, with a strong focus on supporting first-generation college students and its identity as a Hispanic-Serving Institution. The university is located in a community facing significant economic challenges, where many residents experience poverty but are actively working to strengthen their neighborhoods and support one another.

Member Duties : For this Year 1 project, the VISTA will work with the Coordinator of Community Engaged Learning to promote opportunities for students and staff to volunteer with our local partners, and to establish an efficient system for scheduling volunteer activities. The VISTA will also coordinate with campus organizations involved or potentially interested in volunteering, including Campus Ministry Social Action, the James Patterson Honors Program, honor societies, and the Black Student Union. The VISTA will assist the Coordinator in planning community-engaged learning classes for the James Patterson Honors Program, and help develop additional community-engaged learning classes. The VISTA will discuss with the community organizations what their needs are and how we might help them expand their capacity to serve low-income members of the community. The VISTA will develop plans to assist them in meeting those goals, involving other members of the campus community as appropriate.
