UWCCR & IFM - Reduce Food Insecurity in Nevada County, CA

Interfaith Food Ministry (IFM) has provided supplemental food in Nevada County since 1987, serving over a million seniors, families with children, and single adults. In 2025, IFM provided nutritious food to over 10,000 unique individuals. IFM’s clients are 25% children, 45% adults, 30% seniors, 20% hispanic, 5% multi-race, and 5% native american. Food alone won’t solve hunger and distributing food alone is not solving food insecurity. IFM is doubling down on efforts that address structural conditions with a focus on education, local self reliance and resiliency through food production, and the creation of work opportunities for those with barriers to employment. Expected impacts include: increasing the quality and quantity of food available to the community; exploring how and where IFM can improve its service to meet community needs; and the launch of a community food campus that will provide nutritious food, workforce opportunities, education, composting, and community engagement. With VISTA support, IFM will address poverty and food insecurity more efficiently by: increasing available nutritious food for people who need it AND work towards looking at the root causes of food insecurity. IFM knows that the greatest issues of our times are interconnected. In addition to feeding the hungry, IFM is passionate about reducing food waste, composting, and grows/purchases 20% of food locally - all of which cut down on carbon emissions. IFM supports gleaning and redirecting surplus food - reducing landfill waste and emissions. IFM has recently been trained in and starting to prioritize a human-centered design approach that puts the voices and needs of those we serve at the center. IFM will engage directly with low-income communities through focus groups, interviews, and surveys to understand their unique challenges, preferences, and ideas.
