California Justice Leaders

California Justice Leaders (CJL) is an AmeriCorps project designed to provide opportunities for young adults who have had previous contact and involvement with California’s justice system. California has thousands of young people who have suffered juvenile justice involvement. These young people need guidance from credible messengers, individuals who may have experienced similar circumstances and have made a successful transition back into their community. Through AmeriCorps, CJL employs young adult credible messengers for a year of paid service. These AmeriCorps members will have had prior involvement with the criminal justice system, will likely have experienced confinement, and will have demonstrated successful re-entry into their communities Each AmeriCorps Member will be placed at a local partner organization, where they will serve as a navigator for youth and young adults currently in or recently released from California’ juvenile facilities. Members will build awareness of and work to increase utilization of record cleaning pathways and guide youth and young adults on a successful re-entry journey. CJL members will also receive significant leadership training, post-secondary education guidance and support, and professional development designed to provide the skills and social capital necessary to become the next generation of professionals, community leaders, justice field professionals, and agents of systems change. The 2026 CJL cohort will begin their year of service on March 2, 2026 and conclude on December 11, 2026.
