ASPIRE Maryland: Sewa-AmeriCorps-Tutors - SIS

The Sewa International AmeriCorps Maryland Program engages dedicated AmeriCorps members to provide academic support and enrichment to middle school students. Through the role of Supplementary Intervention Specialists (SIS), members help students strengthen their understanding of classroom concepts, complete assignments, and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Members serve in a school-based environment at Briggs Chaney Middle School in Silver Spring, MD, during the academic year, and also support Sewa’s Spring Camp 2026. The program emphasizes individualized tutoring, collaborative learning, and student growth, while offering AmeriCorps members the opportunity to develop their teaching, leadership, and organizational skills. Through a combination of in-class intervention, homework assistance, test preparation, and enrichment activities, the program aims to improve students’ academic performance, confidence, and engagement. Members also participate in weekly trainings, site meetings, and community service projects, fostering a holistic approach to education and service. This program not only benefits students but also provides AmeriCorps members with hands-on experience in education and community service, personal development, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in underserved communities.
