Chicago Debates Regional Expansion and Access Initiative

Each Full Time member will have a portfolio of schools which have only recently formed teams or where the coach is inexeperienced and needs an additional level of support and training. They will ffocus on launching debate programs in neighborhoods Chicago Debates has not previously served. Members provide direct and intensive support, ensuring a faithful and effective implementation of the Chicago Debates service model as they launch their very first after-school debate program. The support they offer their assigned schools will consist of regular in-person and virtual training and troubleshooting sessions with the team coaches, observation of after-school sessions to provide students with additional insights and tips, and logistical support of the teams in their portfolio when they attend Chicago Debates' tournaments. Undertaking these service activities will provide multiple opportunities for leadership and skill development. Members will learn how to manage an assigned caseload, tailoring their services to the individual needs of each school. They will provide one-to-one training for the coaches, giving members experience implementing an established curriculum. But their training role will also include serving as each coach's sounding board, helping to troubleshoot any unique and unexpected challenges that have arisen at individual schools. This will require them to come to each school visit with a solid enough knowledge base to provide guidance on a broad range of issues. In short, their AmeriCorps service will provide excellent preparation for anyone going into careers in education, social work, community action, and politics.
