25-26 PCEI: BSU Night Sky Conservationist
 
 
 
Among elements of Boise State’s mission is to engage the public in taxpayer-funded science. To help further this mission, the Night Sky Conservationist AmeriCorps Member will work very closely with Bruneau Dunes SP staff and the Idaho Dark Sky Alliance (IDSA) to develop educational materials and outreach partnerships. In addition, the member would help develop astronomical observing procedures for using the brand-new observatory at Bruneau Dunes and the future observatory in the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve located at the Stanley Pioneer Park. They will coordinate monthly STEAM programs, build volunteer capacity for education initiatives, support education programs, and plan outreach events and partnership activities at the park and within the Reserve. REQUIREMENTS: Must be U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident; Must possess high school diploma or equivalent; Must be fluent in English; Must be able to commit to the full term of service; Must successfully pass a fingerprint criminal history background check. PREFERRED SKILLS: • Basic knowledge of astronomy • Public speaking experience • Knowledge of astronomical observing and data analysis techniques MEMBER BENEFITS: A taxable, monthly living allowance ($22,200/12-mo, 1700-hr member, paid over the term of service); An education award of $7,395 upon successful completion of term of service; Loan forbearance; Basic medical insurance; Childcare allowance for those who qualify; Professional development, trainings & networking opportunities. Member Duties : Member Activities/Duties: • Extensive training in light pollution, astronomical observing, & data analysis. • Research/develop pedagogical materials & work with park staff & IDSA to understand park needs. • Conduct surveys to gauge public understanding & interest in light pollution mitigation. • Create detailed documentation of light pollution in the Reserve & Bruneau. • Create pedagogical materials tailored for park visitors. • Implement observational procedures to maximize use of Bruneau’s and the Reserve’s observatory. • Develop outreach materials for visitors to the Reserve & state park. • Collect/analyze light pollution data within the park & Reserve. • Support Bruneau Dunes' summer stargazing program events & public programs in Reserve. Project Location/Transportation Needs: 1910 University Drive, Boise ID 83725. Members are responsible for their own transportation to and from the project location. Frequent travel to Bruneau Dunes SP and the Reserve is required.
