Healthy Families for a Brighter Future

The Boys & Girls Club of Pharr-San Juan (BGCPSJ) is partnering with AmeriCorps to strengthen youth and family well-being across Hidalgo County, Texas. With 45 AmeriCorps members serving at Club sites, the program promotes Healthy Futures by addressing pressing health challenges facing children and families through nutrition education, fitness activities, parent workshops, and community health events. AmeriCorps members serve as role models, mentors, and facilitators, leading engaging lessons on healthy eating, organizing structured fitness activities, and supporting parents with tools to create healthier home environments. They also collaborate with schools, local agencies, and health providers to host events that connect families to vital resources and promote community-wide wellness. The program creates a lasting impact at multiple levels. For youth, members build knowledge, confidence, and resilience, equipping them with lifelong healthy habits and leadership skills. For families, workshops and events strengthen parental engagement, ensuring healthy practices extend beyond the Club and into homes. For communities, partnerships foster sustainable networks of support that expand access to health education and services. Members receive comprehensive training in youth development, nutrition, and health promotion, ensuring high-quality service and professional growth. Their contributions not only transform the lives of those they serve but also equip them with skills in leadership, education, and community engagement for their own futures. This initiative directly aligns with AmeriCorps’ Healthy Futures priority by advancing obesity prevention, increasing access to physical activity, and building community capacity to support long-term health. Together, BGCPSJ and AmeriCorps are investing in the next generation—ensuring that youth in Hidalgo County grow up safe, supported, and healthy, with the resilience to thrive in school, career, and life.
