Americorps Youth Launch

AmeriCorps Youth Launch (AYL) will offer individual attention that many disadvantaged youth need to become educationally successful and academically engaged. AYL members will be part of a team within the school or other youth-serving community programs in the six county region (Clarke, Decatur, Lucas, Ringgold, Union, and Wayne). The team will identify youth who could benefit from extra individualized attention. Members will increase the chances that these targeted youth will become academically engaged and educationally successful by providing the following services: building developmental assets, igniting sparks, setting academic and personal goals, recruiting mentors, engaging youth in service projects and providing enrichment opportunities such as summer programming, day camps, and other activities.

Member Duties : AmeriCorps members will serve in a variety of positions throughout the southern Iowa region working with at-risk youth in a school setting, before and after school, and summer programming. All positions are designed to build Developmental Assets in youth through mentoring to increase educational aspirations and academic engagement. Members will provide academic assistance, connect youth with mentors, help youth set goals and look ahead to think about future plans. A mixture of planning and direct service to youth can be expected. Members will also have the opportunity to do a variety of service projects with fellow members in their community. Team meetings will give members an opportunity to receive training on different topics, share experiences, bond with other team members and learn more about AmeriCorps and National Service.
