RICJ Juvenile Justice VISTA: Health & Justice in RI

Rhode Island for Community and Justice (RICJ) is a non-profit organization located in Providence, Rhode Island. RICJ is the only organization dedicated to supporting Juvenile Hearing Boards (JHBs) throughout Rhode Island and works directly with RI youth to teach them about community supports, foster connections, and prepare for life after high school. JHBs are a post-arrest diversion opportunity for any youth less than 18 years old facing misdemeanor charges; JHBs help the youth repair the harm of their offense, learn how to avoid making similar mistakes in the future, and leave the system with no juvenile record. RICJ supports JHBs statewide by promoting information sharing between the JHBs located in different cities and towns, through case management partnerships, and through granting JHBs additional resources, such as funding for therapy. Additionally, RICJ collects data to ensure JHBs are effectively helping youth in all corners of our state. As RICJ’s Juvenile Justice VISTA, your primary responsibility will be to support the capacity and work of RICJ’s multi-layered Juvenile Justice advocacy for Rhode Island’s Juvenile Hearing Boards. The ideal candidate for this role has experience in the youth justice system, a genuine desire to help youth, and familiarity with restorative justice. Both oral and written communication skills for a wide range of audiences (e.g. youth, law enforcement, parents) are essential for success in this position. Join us for a chance to gain valuable juvenile justice and youth empowerment experience, and to work at one of the few juvenile justice organizations that are truly youth-led.

Member Duties : As RICJ’s Juvenile Justice VISTA, your primary responsibility will be to support the capacity and growth of RICJ’s juvenile justice team. You will play an important role in collecting juvenile hearing board (JHB) data, creating innovative events to bring together JHB members and the community, crafting grant proposals to add resources to JHBs, expanding RICJ’s case management program. You will also be involved in community outreach efforts to raise awareness and support of JHBs among stakeholders such as youth, parents, law enforcement, and other community leaders. You will have the opportunity to support RICJ’s Youth Empowerment program by connecting with RICJ’s after-school youth program members and teaching them about restorative justice and JHBs. Finally, you will support RICJ as a whole by helping RICJ to fundraise, recruit volunteers, and help onboard RICJ interns.
