TMA Homes Not Borders: Refugee Economic Empowerment VISTA
 
 
 
Homes Not Borders (HNB) works to ensure that their clients, refugee families who have resettled in new communities in the Washington, D.C. Metro area, have access to the tools they need to thrive and feel empowered and secure in all aspects of their lives. HNB focuses on programs that support client families in securing economic security, starting with our basic food security initiative that implements a food collection and distribution program providing healthy food for client families living on a low income as they develop connections and secure employment. This aspect of the program grew directly from the VISTA project's Community Needs Assessment. Other programs include the Storytelling initiative to help speed up the integration of families into their new communities as well as provide a way for refugees to tell their stories and be compensated for it. As the majority of refugees come with little to no financial resources and receive only 90 days of direct support, the TMA AmeriCorps VISTA creating and implementing these programs plays a critical role in ensuring self-sufficiency and providing the tools our clients need to successfully grow and thrive.

Member Duties : The Refugee Economic Empowerment VISTA will assist Homes Not Borders as we work to support newly arrived refugee families throughout the greater Washington DC metro area. They will build capacity for the HNB food security initiative, developing and implementing systems for regular food procurement and distribution events to provide HNB client families with reliable access to healthy food. The VISTA will also support the HNB Storytelling Program by building out a lesson plan and educational modules to incorporate into HNB client storytelling events. This will empower storytellers to speak at more events and thus generate more income. Speaking proficiency in Dari, Farsi or Spanish is preferred.
