Stewards VISTA: Grow Ohio Valley Y1

*Actual Start Date TBD Grow Ohio Valley is a community-rooted nonprofit focused on rebuilding a local food system through small-scale farming, education, and practical solutions. Based in Wheeling, West Virginia, we operate four urban farm sites and run the Public Market—a year-round farmer’s market and grocery store that brings locally grown food directly to families who need it most. Additionally, we are leading a project with DEP Abandoned Mine Lands to build a safe and accessible East Wheeling Community Park. Our goal is simple: help people eat better, farm smarter, and build stronger communities by keeping food dollars close to home. We provide hands-on learning for young people, support beginning farmers, and connect local producers to customers. By improving access to fresh, local food, we reduce dependency on outside suppliers and give families healthier, homegrown options. Our market helps eliminate food deserts in downtown Wheeling, and our SNAP Stretch program allows families using food stamps to get more for their money—making good food affordable and available. At the same time, we’re working to grow the next generation of farmers through our Incubator Farm Program, which provides training, tools, and land to people who want to farm and sell locally. This VISTA role is perfect for someone who believes in the power of hard work, small farms, and rural resilience. You'll be part of building a food economy that supports jobs, health, and self-reliance in the Ohio Valley.

Member Duties : The VISTA will help launch Grow Ohio Valley’s Incubator Farm Program, working directly with the Farm Manager on abandoned mine lands to build infrastructure and create training plans for new farmers. They’ll develop agreements and systems to support aspiring growers, research grant opportunities, and help build the foundation for a self-sustaining farm program. This role is ideal for someone who values local agriculture, wants to teach others how to farm and run a small business, and believes in helping communities feed themselves.
