25-26-Will County Habitat-Housing Action Corps- Construction

The Construction Systems Specialist will serve with Will County Habitat for Humanity in Joliet, IL from August 2025-2026. Will County Habitat for Humanity (WCHFH) is part of Housing Action Corps, an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. Housing Action Corps members receive custom training, support, and networking opportunities in housing and community development, in addition to the traditional benefits of AmeriCorps VISTA. Learn more: housingactionil.org/americorps. Since 1988, WCHFH addresses the lack of decent affordable housing in Will County by helping low-income families purchase affordable homes and make necessary repairs. Habitat homeowners build their homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage, which helps families improve their living conditions and gain financial stability. The Construction Systems Specialist will research and plan for the implementation of new building methods, such as modular housing, to reduce cost and shorten building timeframes. Our ideal candidate is passionate about housing, motivated to learn and grow through the VISTA program, and comfortable tackling projects independently and with a team. They should demonstrate an interest in affordable housing and sustainable building practices, as well as a basic understanding of construction tools and safety protocols. Previous experience in construction, even as a volunteer, is a plus! Candidates should have a problem-solving mindset; be comfortable speaking to groups of volunteers with varying skill levels; and be able to manage schedules, workflows, and supply chain logistics. This position offers shared housing and utilities as a supplemental benefit.

Member Duties : A stable and secure place to live leads to improved health outcomes, educational opportunities, and economic stability. Our programs help create pathways to economic mobility through homeownership, but we need a dedicated VISTA to identify innovative ways to build more affordable housing in Will County. The Construction Systems Specialist will research and develop a plan to institute Modular Housing and other sustainable building practices into our homeownership program. They will update our construction manuals and implement a modular home into our annual build plan. To ensure the new construction systems are sustainable, the VISTA will train WCHFH volunteers and staff to continue implementing and growing the modular housing program after their service ends.
