Stewards VISTA: Floyd County Flood Relief Y1

Floyd County, Kentucky, is on a mission to become a national model for coal community revitalization—and we need your help! If you’re looking for a position where you can make a real difference and be surrounded by breathtaking mountains and some of the best folks on Earth, then keep reading! Floyd County, Kentucky, is rolling up its sleeves to rebuild and reinvent itself after the coal industry downturn, and we need a go-getter to help us out. Focusing on former coal camps, homes and businesses built in the floodplain this VISTA will help land where the coal companies built these towns nearly 100 years ago. The legacy mining has caused runoff and debris that exacerbated flooding and in 2022 these homes and businesses were flooded beyond repair. Now these communities are struggling with blight as these homes and businesses sit empty and FEMA plans to tear them down soon. The towns need to plan ways to reuse this land in ways that FEMA will allow. This VISTA will lead community engagement and planning efforts to develop plans to repurpose these plots of land that will help bring new life to these towns with a focus on food security for this impoverished area of the county, as well as bringing in tourism to create jobs and opportunities for small businesses.
