Stewards VISTA: Outdoor Recreation Council of Appalachia Y1

The Outdoor Recreation Council of Appalachia (ORCA) works across Southeast Ohio to strengthen regional economies in coal-impacted communities by leveraging outdoor recreation, heritage assets, and place-based development strategies. ORCA collaborates with local organizations to advance economic resilience, environmental stewardship, and community pride. This VISTA project supports ORCA’s capacity to sustain recreation-based economic development by creating internal systems, planning tools, and documentation frameworks for staff use. The project focuses on connecting environmental assets with workforce development, tourism, small business growth, and regional branding through internal system building. The VISTA will contribute to the development of internal planning documents, resource inventories, branding frameworks, funding preparation systems, volunteer program infrastructure, and collaboration toolkits. These products will enable staff and partners to advance outdoor recreation initiatives, pursue aligned funding opportunities, and coordinate multi-county efforts beyond the VISTA term. By strengthening systems that position outdoor recreation as a driver of long-term economic resilience, this project addresses root causes of poverty in historically underserved Appalachian communities. The service opportunity offers experience in community development systems, economic development planning, grant research infrastructure, and organizational capacity-building within a regional nonprofit context.
