PHENND Fellows: Sustainability Coordinator

GreenFutures is the School District of Philadelphia's sustainability plan and program with five guiding principles: Efficiencies, Engagement, Equity, Environment, and Education. These principles guide every focus area of the plan with measurable objectives and outcomes. This plan supports the District's goals by better serving all of our students by creating equitable access to green school resources in every neighborhood. Evidence shows that green schools help to develop critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of science, social studies, math, reading and writing. With GreenFutures, our charge is unchanged: Every child can learn. Every school can be a great school. GreenFutures aims to reduce the District’s environmental footprint, conserve resources, decrease consumption and waste, and create green school settings and healthy indoor environments. This plan connects student curriculum with facilities management and operations, teachers, students and school communities and stakeholders. The plan encourages school students, families and friends to participate in developing and implementing sustainability initiatives in every community. This project is a part of the PHENND Fellows VISTA program housed at the Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development (PHENND). PHENND is a network of over 25 colleges and universities that strengthens service-learning, civic engagement, and community partnership in Philadelphia.

Member Duties : The VISTA will help increase the school District’s capacity to take on sustainability-related projects and increase the number of sustainability-related resources available through the ongoing SDP GreenFutures plan. This plan aims to make every school great and every school green through five focus areas: Education for Sustainability; Energy and Efficiencies; Consumption and Waste; School Greenscapes; and Healthy Schools and Healthy Living. The VISTA will support the next iteration of GreenFutures by organizing and strengthening district-wide sustainability resources. The VISTA will help finalize materials such as the Climate Resiliency Plan, School Greenscapes Resource Guide and Recycling Resource Guide to improve their clarity and accessibility for district offices. The VISTA will also help improve systems for tracking and distributing sustainability tools, ensuring resources like the Lending Library and Eco-Schools Action Cards are easier to access and maintain for long-term use.
