Stewards VISTA: Groundwork Bridgeport, Inc Y1

Groundwork Bridgeport is a Bridgeport, Connecticut-based nonprofit dedicated to creating a healthier, greener, and more connected community through environmental stewardship, urban forestry, and community engagement. We transform vacant lots, neglected spaces, and underutilized parks into vibrant public places, empowering residents of all ages to take part in efforts that improve quality of life. Our programs include tree planting, community cleanups, pollinator gardens, and intergenerational initiatives that connect youth and seniors around urban agriculture and environmental care. A VISTA placed with us will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact by strengthening our capacity to deliver community-led environmental improvements. The VISTA will help us build systems for volunteer recruitment and engagement, grow partnerships with schools and local businesses, and expand fundraising efforts — all to increase the scale and sustainability of our work. Bridgeport is a vibrant but historically under-resourced community, and this work directly contributes to improving our neighborhoods. A VISTA will gain invaluable experience in nonprofit program development, partnership cultivation, fundraising strategy, and community engagement. Most importantly, they will help us grow a movement of stewardship that empowers residents to shape the future of their city.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps VISTA will play an active role in growing our stewardship programs by recruiting and coordinating volunteers for tree plantings, cleanups, and community garden projects. They will develop resources to plan and participate in volunteer days, support on-the-ground project logistics, and strengthen partnerships with schools, local businesses, and community groups. The VISTA will also develop resources to create outreach materials, share stories from the field on social media, and track participation and project outcomes. They’ll collaborate with fundraising efforts by supporting donor outreach and helping build fee-for-service volunteer experiences for corporate teams. By the end of their service, the VISTA will have helped bring more people into hands-on stewardship and leave behind resources to keep that momentum going.
