*MCVP – Farm to School of Park County VISTA

The goal of this VISTA project is to plan, design, and implement sustainable and customized Farm to School educational enrichment programs at Gardiner and Arrowhead Schools in Park County, Montana. Park County, Montana, situated at the northern entrance to Yellowstone National Park, is a region rich in agricultural history, cultural heritage and natural beauty. Park County’s population has grown by 13.5% in recent years, adding over 2,300 residents since 2019 and for a total of approximately 17,900 people. The Livingston Food Resource Center (LFRC), Park County’s primary food pantry, reports that it serves nearly 20% of residents monthly, assisting 475 unique households and 928 individuals. LFRC year-to-date food distributions in 2024 have already surpassed those of 2022, reflecting increasing demand. LFRC anticipates continued growth in nutritional support needs due to rising costs of housing and food. During the 2023-2024 academic year, 43% of Park County Students lived at or below the 200% poverty line and qualified for reduced price or free school meals. As of October 2024, about 50% of Park County’s students qualify for free and reduced-price school meals. underscoring substantial increases in the county’s levels of household food insecurity. This VISTA project will move children in Park County public schools out of poverty by increasing their knowledge and familiarity with healthy, locally grown food, resulting in more food-secure children who can thrive. Located in Livingston, MT! Rental assistance is provided at this site.
