MCVP – Foundational Public Health Services VISTA

The goal of this VISTA project is to use the results of the foundational health assessment to develop tailored, sustainable public health services improvements for Montana’s decentralized public health system. Montana is a rural state that has 46 counties with less than 10,000 residents. Much of the state qualifies as “frontier,” meaning there are fewer than 6 residents per square mile. Rural communities face challenges with health equity in a variety of ways, including but not limited to poverty, access to care, and other social determinants of health. More than half of the 58 county, city-county, multi-county, and tribal agencies providing public health programs and services employ fewer than 5 FTEs, and only four staff more than 50. The foundational public health service assessment of Montana was conducted in summer 2024. This VISTA project will work with our department to provide health departments that participated in the assessment with meaningful data and action plans to improve their services. This VISTA project will move Montanans out of poverty by increasing access to quality public health services, leading to a more robust public health system across the state. Located in Missoula or Helena, MT!
