*MCVP – DPHHS Public Health System VISTA

The goal of this VISTA project is to increase the effectiveness of public and tribal health departments by standardizing the policies and procedures of local health departments across the state. Montana is a rural state that has 46 counties with less than 10,000 residents. Much of the state qualifies as “frontier,” meaning there are fewer than 6 residents per square mile. Rural communities face challenges with health equity in a variety of ways, including but not limited to poverty, access to care, and other social determinants of health. More than half of the 58 county, city-county, multi-county, and tribal agencies providing public health programs and services employ fewer than 5 full-time employees, and only four agencies have more than 50. Increasing public health capacity ensures that all community members have equitable access to essential public health services that can address the social determinants of health in partnership with stakeholders as chief health strategists in their communities. This VISTA project will move Montanans out of poverty by enhancing access to quality public health services, leading to a more robust public health system across the state. Located in Helena or Missoula, MT.
