MCVP – Montana Food Bank Network Child Hunger VISTA

The goal of this VISTA project is to increase access to summer meals for children in low-income families across Montana by developing more efficient program systems to serve partners in the Montana Food Bank Network. One in nine (1:9) Montana households are unsure of where their next meal will come from; that equates to 1:6 children in Montana living in a food insecure household. The Montana Food Bank Network works to eradicate hunger and increase access to resources in all 56 counties. One of the biggest contributing factors to hunger in Montana is the rural nature of the state; considering the sheer size of the state most areas are inaccessible to consistent resources. The increasing price of food, the closures of 10 Office of Public Assistance (OPA) in 2017, and lack of community resources also contribute to the overall hunger in Montana. This VISTA project will move children and families out of poverty by improving access to nutritious food resulting in reduced food insecurity.
