White Clouds Preserve

The East Fork Salmon River watershed of central Idaho provides vital habitat for endangered fish species including Chinook salmon, steelhead, and bull trout. It is an important salmon hunting ground for tribes and has seen a steep decline in fish numbers since the early-1900’s. The East Fork is also home to other iconic wildlife including elk, black bear, coyotes, pronghorn, wolves, bighorn sheep, migratory birds, birds of prey, and more. However, after nearly 150 years of grazing and agricultural use, the land and riparian areas along the East Fork have suffered degradation. Negative impacts from irrigation and grazing include loss of streamside vegetation (which is vital for cooling water temperatures and providing native habitat), excessive sedimentation, reduced water flows, and more. White Clouds Preserve is looking for two full-time AmeriCorps members to participate in hands-on habitat restoration efforts along the East Fork of the Salmon River watershed. The restoration project will result in the treatment of 20 acres of riparian and upland zones with a focus on native plant restoration and invasive plant removal. To support future volunteer efforts along the upper Salmon River watershed, WCP is also constructing housing structures to accommodate future groups of AmeriCorps members and volunteers contributing to restoration efforts and community needs. The Restoration Technicians will work with WCP staff, volunteers, and other AmeriCorps members to assist with day-to-day tasks related to restoration projects, the volunteer housing project, outreach and educational efforts. This position is based out of beautiful Central Idaho. The area is very remote and rural so reliable transportation is needed. Much of the work conducted will be outdoors and can take place in a wide variety of weather conditions. Members must be prepared to get their hands dirty and be outside for long periods of time.
