UAB Outreach and Engagement VISTA

The UAB Outreach and Engagement VISTA Member will build the capacity of the Office of Service Learning and Undergraduate Research by facilitating events that highlight high-impact practices for UAB students, staff, faculty, and community members in the Birmingham, AL area. By supporting these initiatives, the VISTA Member will strengthen relationships with local partners, enhancing community engagement and collaboration. In addition, UAB Outreach and Engagement VISTAs will boost student involvement with community-based organizations and schools that address education, economic opportunity, and healthy futures. The fellow will help forge and grow partnerships between UAB faculty and community stakeholders, driving projects that tackle these critical issues. By supporting UAB students’ success and engagement, the VISTA Member will ensure that both the university and the broader Birmingham community benefit from increased connectivity, shared resources, and meaningful collaboration.

Member Duties : The VISTA Members will create and manage pathways and incentives that foster student engagement both on and off campus. They will expand support for faculty teaching service-learning courses by strengthening curricula, facilitating community partnerships, and developing relevant media. In addition, they will research and provide capacity-building opportunities for nonprofit partners, coordinate internal and external media outreach to spotlight successes, and assess course outcomes with academically rigorous tools. Fellows will also support major events of the Office of Service Learning and Undergraduate Research, ensuring a robust and impactful service-learning experience for everyone involved.
