Good Food Network VISTA

The Good Food Economy program at Seattle Good Business Network, a values-based community economic development non-profit, is to connects the regional food community to resources, opportunities, and each other, strengthening the local food chain and building a resilient, sustainable, and just local food economy. The Good Food Network VISTA will support our work building Nourishing Community, a group within the larger network of food security businesses and organizations supported by an online platform and events. This community-building effort will create listings for Eat Local First, where organizations can use the Wholesale Finder to identify local food producers to source from and list themselves to provide visibility for their free food programs. This outreach would further support connecting food producers to markets for seconds, surplus, and rescued food, both paid and donated, through Good Food Exchange, getting producers to list what they have and helping businesses and organizations to find no and low-cost food. Finally, they will support Good Food Kitchens, which funds food businesses preparing meals for community members facing food insecurity by developing systems for feedback and impact reporting to secure resources for longer term sustainability. In this position, Seattle Good Business Network partners with Harvest Against Hunger, which utilizes AmeriCorps members in the Harvest VISTA program who build sustainable community food security programs. These include gleaning projects to regional food security assessments and expanding community-run gardens and food bank farms. AmeriCorps members serve for a year: recruiting and coordinating volunteers, addressing food supply challenges, creating systems to collect data, and growing organizations through storytelling. They gain professional development and team building in a nationwide cohort. Harvest Against Hunger and the Harvest VISTA Program aim to engage the community in tackling food insecurity.
