FISH: Food Rescue Program Coordinator VISTA

FISH, the only food bank in Kittitas County, Washington, will build food rescue capacity in Central Washington. The target area is approximately 2.5 hours east of Seattle. Compared to Washington, a higher percentage of people in Kittitas and Yakima Counties (the target area in Central Washington; N = 300,567) have food insecurity (14.8% compared to 11.5%), are a food desert population (19.6% compared to 12.3%), and live in food desert census tracts. FISH was founded in 1971. Its mission is to collaborate with community partners to improve food security, nutrition security, and health outcomes in Central Washington. FISH operates seven U.S. Department of Agriculture programs, two U.S. Department of Health and Human Services programs, three state-funded programs, and a community lunch program for low-income individuals. It supplies food to seven food pantries, three of which it operates. In 2023, FISH distributed 365,720 pounds of food to food pantry clients, 76,848 meals to meal program clients, and 820 food boxes to grocery program clients. In this position FISH partners with Harvest Against Hunger, a program incubator and catalyst utilizing a team of AmeriCorps members in the Harvest VISTA program who build sustainable, community food security programs. These range from gleaning projects, to regional food security assessments, to expanding community-run gardens and food bank farms. AmeriCorps members serve with their projects for a year: recruiting and coordinating volunteers, addressing challenges and management related to food supply chain, creating systems to collect data and evaluate programs, and growing organizations through storytelling, development and fundraising. They benefit from professional development and team building in a nationwide cohort. Harvest Against Hunger and the Harvest VISTA Program aims to involve the larger community in addressing food insecurity.
