CCUA's Edible and Native Plants VISTA

Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture works to enhance our community’s health by connecting people to agriculture and the land through hands-on learning opportunities from seed to plate. The VISTA project will seek to: support newly established programs and help existing programs adapt to using Columbia’s Agriculture Park. The VISTA project expects to benefit families living with low-incomes, children enrolled in Columbia Public Schools (a school district with high rates of free and reduced lunch), and military Veterans. VISTA members will contribute to the goals of the project by performing activities such as: creating lessons, creating garden plans, creating interpretive displays for use at Columbia’s Agriculture Park, organizing events, developing and documenting procedures, recruiting volunteers, and developing new programming.

Member Duties : The VISTA will refine and create new garden plans that will be used at the Agriculture Park's 3 acres of demonstration plots to showcase a variety of growing methods (e.g. crop rotation techniques, companion planting, organic pest control, raise-bed gardens, in-ground gardens, trellising, wildlife control, use of native plants, fruit trees, etc). The VISTA will design accompanying signage in a way that is understandable to a beginning gardener. The VISTA will lead 100 shifts of volunteers to improve demonstration areas at the Agriculture Park. The VISTA will also work to develop a set of procedures, best practices, and educational materials for programming at the park.
