Adelante: Plaza de la Raza

When it comes to spurring economic development and improving the lives of the Omaha residents, the Latino Economic Development Council is taking an active role in creating the conditions for growth, innovation, and progress by leading community engagement and outreach to improve Plaza de la Raza. Together we will lay the foundation for a brighter future PARA TODOS – a place where prosperity is more broadly shared. Most of the Latino community is concentrated in three main zip-codes, commonly known as South Omaha. These areas contain 86% of all Latinos in Southeast Omaha—the area of the city bordered by Dodge St. to the North, 72nd St to the West, the Missouri River to the East, and Sarpy County to the South. Southeast Omaha has the largest proportion of Latinos in Omaha with close to 57% of all Latinos in the city. Located in the core of South Omaha at 24th and N Streets, Plaza de la Raza is a premier community-focused and culturally significant outdoor gathering space with significant potential for improvement. Though currently lacking defined programming and site amenities, it serves as a prominent location for Omaha’s annual Cinco de Mayo celebration, drawing thousands of people from near and far to South Omaha. This site has the potential to become a catalyst for economic growth by transforming into an accessible neighborhood park and destination for the 5,000 residents living within a 15-minute walk of the Plaza and visitors supporting this thriving business district. This VISTA assignment is part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 Green VISTA Corps Program which seeks to help historically underserved communities support environmental stewardship and anti-poverty efforts. The program is focused on creating new partnerships with local organizations in the Region 7 geographic area to support capacity-building projects that will support poverty alleviation and advance efforts to protect human health and the environment.
