Native American Workforce Development VISTA

This position joins Oregon Health Authority’s statewide AmeriCorps VISTA team at Elderberry Wisdom Farm (EWF). Elderberry Wisdom Farm is a 501(c)(3) Native American nonprofit organization located in rural Marion County in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. EWF provides holistic workforce opportunities and culturally tailored training and mentoring for Native Americans and other interns pursuing meaningful career pathway planning that will support economic stability and improved health outcomes. We provide conservation career pathway planning, leadership development and mentoring as participants become small business owner-operators. This hybridized business model provides culturally tailored support that is compatible with Native Americans’ learning styles and cultural values to support the concept of service to community. Improving social and economic sustainability is a critical factor in helping low-income individuals achieve better health outcomes because it directly influences access to essential resources such as nutritious food, safe housing, transportation, healthcare, and education. As a key social determinant of health, economic stability affects a person’s ability to manage chronic conditions, reduce stress, and maintain overall well-being. Strengthening economic stability through supportive services and community-based programs can help reduce health disparities and improve quality of life for underserved populations. In addition to activities at your individual host site, OHA provides members with project orientation, training and professional development, 5 in-person team meetings per year, and support from VISTA team leaders and project director. Visit www.elderberrywisdom.org to learn more about Elderberry Wisdom Farm. Visit: healthoregon.org/vista for more details about the OHA VISTA project. Position offers are made on a rolling basis; early applications are strongly encouraged. This work is to be completed in-person at EWF in Salem, Oregon.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps member will improve economic stability and health outcomes for Native Americans and other low-income individuals through 2 major objectives:1) implement quality improvement initiatives to the Elderberry Wisdom Farm workforce development program and 2) strengthen community partnerships, outreach systems, and sustainable funding strategies that will enhance long-term sustainability. This project improves services that support individuals as they learn to develop sustainable microenterprise projects as a pathway toward economic empowerment, improved health outcomes, and more resilient Native American communities. Members serve Oregonians through indirect service and capacity building. While programs developed endure for years, there is limited direct interaction with community members. Ideal candidate is independent, motivated and passionate about community health, food sovereignty, poverty alleviation, and culturally grounded social and economic development initiatives.
