Mobile Farmers Market & Garden Coordinator VISTA V4

Project New Village is a 501(c)(3) BIPOC-led, grassroots nonprofit working to revitalize and transform the food supply system of Greater Southeastern San Diego. The Good Food District, which is Project New Village’s model for neighborhood transformation, aims to elevate and integrate urban agriculture to increase access to healthy food and as a key component of community revitalization in food-insecure neighborhoods. PNV’s mission is to serve as a catalyst for resident-led, community-rooted experiences that BUILD stronger neighborhoods; IMPROVE the neighborhood food supply chain; STIMULATE collective investment in better health; and MAXIMIZE the impact of investment to address social inequities. Located in Southeastern San Diego, near bus and trolley stops, Project New Village is seeking an organized VISTA to 1) develop organizational systems for the People’s Produce Mobile Farmers Market refrigerated food truck program; 2) build partnerships with community based organizations and train partners to deliver health literacy sessions at Mobile Farmers Market sites using tools developed in collaboration with university nutrition students; and 3) create a layout for optimal use of space at the Mt. Hope Community Garden that develops a resale area for the sale of excess produce, integrates composting activities to reduce food waste, and redesigns growing spaces based on the amounts and types of seasonal produce needed by the Mobile Farmers Market. If you are a hard-working, equity-minded individual looking to put your organizational skills to work in a dynamic and community-oriented environment, this could be the perfect growth opportunity for you. You can expect to learn about urban agriculture and neighborhood-level resource challenges as you work to create permanent infrastructure to support community revitalization in disinvested neighborhoods.

Member Duties : Located in beautiful, sunny San Diego, the area that Project New Village serves includes much of the City of San Diego’s Promise Zone (one of only 22 such communities of concentrated poverty nationwide to be designated by the federal government for supplemental resource investment), National City, and the City of Lemon Grove. The People’s Produce mobile farmers market is the first of its kind in San Diego County, and you will be a critical part of this program’s operations, helping to shape service delivery and establish partnerships to create a sustainable program that improves access to healthy foods for marginalized and underserved residents. We hope that you will consider serving with our team that is working to transform the food supply system to improve food security by removing barriers that impede access to good food through community/civic engagement and building alternative food ecosystems.
