Central Community House

Central Community House’s (CCH) mission is to empower people to reach their full potential, to be self-supporting, and to live cooperatively with all others. In this project, the VISTA will work with Central Community House’s (CCH) senior program, Village Central to serve seniors living in the Near East/South Side neighborhoods of Columbus. Many seniors in our direct service area are categorized as low-to-moderate income (LMI), and as a result, have difficulty accessing certain resources to maintain independence as they age. Village Central seeks to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment of all seniors living in our main service area, and develop/implement an improved volunteer engagement strategy. The VISTA will implement a “Voice of the Community” survey that will create space for community members to share what they value/need, and would like to see in their community. Information gathered will be written into a report and presented to key local stakeholders, including partners, funders, government officials, and community members; and will result in the matching of volunteers with newly defined opportunities. The VISTA will also help increase the capacity of Village Central’s Advisory Council. Currently the council meets monthly to plan events, evaluate the progress of the program, and guide the implementation of services. The VISTA will work with the seniors and volunteers on the council on professional/leadership development goals, and implement education/training to improve the group’s effectiveness. The VISTA will also train staff on newly created procedures for engaging volunteers, and evaluating this engagement. Completing these objectives will provide a solid foundation for Village Central to continue to meet senior needs for the next several years.

Member Duties : The VISTA will work to understand the needs of seniors through the creation/implementation of a comprehensive “Voice of the Community” survey. This will also include compiling information, drawing common themes, and developing a written report to be used to guide future service delivery. Utilizing data from the completed survey, the VISTA will work to enhance volunteer engagement, including the development of procedures and evaluation tools. The VISTA will also improve the effectiveness of the Advisory Council. Consisting of a group of seniors serving as volunteers, the council currently is responsible for planning events, evaluating program performance, and guiding services. The VISTA will work with its current members to develop leadership development goals, and implement educational content to improve the group’s effectiveness. This will result in senior volunteers being equipped with tools to change systems, improve program interventions, and advocate on behalf of peers.
