Rural Wastewater Systems Outreach Coordinator VISTA

The Wastewater Treatment Systems and Management in Rural Unincorporated Communities in the Alabama Black Belt Project is a transformative 3-year initiative aimed at addressing the critical challenges of inadequate wastewater management in one of the nation’s most underserved regions. By installing hundreds of innovative onsite wastewater treatment systems in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency, the project seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, mitigate waterborne diseases, and build climate resilience. The Alabama Black Belt, characterized by its high poverty rates and poorly drained soils, faces severe wastewater issues, often resulting in raw sewage exposure—a crisis exacerbated by climate change and economic disparities. The program will also focus on advancing climate-resilient workforce development, fostering community engagement, and promoting sustainable practices in Wilcox, Hale, and Lowndes counties.
