Criminal Justice Services Diversion Project VISTA

Who: Join Lewis and Clark County’s Department of Criminal Justice Services in Helena, Montana, as an AmeriCorps VISTA. Collaborate with justice leaders, law enforcement, public defenders, and community organizations to create a program that diverts individuals from incarceration into supportive services. What: Design a Criminal Justice Diversion Program that connects individuals facing non-violent misdemeanor charges to critical resources like housing, mental health care, addiction treatment, and other community services. Your work will address the root causes of justice system involvement, such as poverty and behavioral health needs, helping reduce reliance on detention. When: This is a one-year service position beginning in 2025. During this time, you will research, design, and draft the program framework for implementation in 2026. Where: Your office will be in downtown Helena at the Law and Justice Center, surrounded by local justice system partners and community resources. You'll also visit stakeholders across the county, including courts, law enforcement agencies, and service providers. How: • Research best practices from nationally recognized diversion models. • Engage with key stakeholders through meetings and community outreach. • Analyze local data to tailor the program to the county's needs. • Draft policies, procedures, and training manuals for the program. • Develop tools to evaluate program success and sustainability. This role is your chance to make a lasting impact by helping Lewis and Clark County’s justice system focus on rehabilitation and community support rather than incarceration.
