St. Mary's seeks to serve low-income people in the Houston Harris County area, specifically the Greater OST/South Union neighborhood of zip code 77021. Houston, Texas, ZIP code 77021 is located in the southeastern part of the city, encompassing parts of the Third Ward, a historically African American neighborhood with deep cultural and historical roots. The area has been shaped by both economic challenges and efforts toward revitalization. The low-income population in this ZIP code is characterized by several key factors including but not limited to economic disparities. A substantial portion of residents live below the poverty line, with families and individuals struggling to cover basic needs like housing, healthcare, and transportation. Employment opportunities in the area may be limited, with many residents working in low-wage jobs that do not offer stability or benefits. Residents in Houston Harris County area have housing challenges and affordable housing is a pressing concern, and many residents may live in subsidized housing or rely on government assistance. St. Mary’s currently partners with Houston Food Bank to provide food insecurity programming and provides hygiene packs and school uniforms at Cullen Middle School and Foster Elementary. St. Mary’s recently received a Community Development Grant and is bringing on an Operations and Data VISTA member to help build the capacity of St. Mary’s as they scale their anti-poverty programming. St. Mary’s will ensure sustainability through VISTA developed guides and standard operating procedures, as well as cross-training staff and volunteers. The VISTA member will serve 3 in-person and 2 days teleservice.
