Smithers Economic Development Coordinator VISTA
 
 
 
This VISTA project will be based in the community of Smithers, WV, a small, rural municipality located east of the capital city of Charleston. In this project, the member will support the City of Smithers’ pursuit of its economic revitalization goals with a focus on improving locals’ quality of life and sustaining and adding jobs to help raise up those unemployed or impoverished residents or those under other economic stresses. The main goal is to increase the community’s capacity to build sustainable solutions focused on developing a vibrant tourism economy in Smithers and bettering the life for residents. This emphasis on tourism was spawned by the designation in 2020 of America’s newest national park, the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, only about a half-hour’s drive away. The municipality has been tremendously successful in developing new partnerships, securing funding, and obtaining technical assistance to support these priorities, including business development, land revitalization, and outdoor recreation. Smithers is at an important moment in its economic development journey that requires turning this momentum into tangible projects and capacity that can deliver sustainable economic growth for the community as it is presented with amazing new opportunities after suffering from a virtual tsunami of economic downturns. The project will include engaging community members in the work of the city, continuing to build and sustain strong partnerships, supporting the implementation of projects that have been funded or identified as high-priority, and assisting with strategic planning about future priorities for Smithers, including addressing how to sustain successes after initially attained.

Member Duties : This member will have responsabilities including but not limited to: - Building new community relationships - Recruiting and training volunteers - Researching models in other municipalities similar to Smithers who have undergone similar development - Creating new methodologies of obtaining community input to get past "survey burnout" - Developing new systems for city public communications about ongoing efforts - Researching, and assisting in the completion of grant writing - Developing systems for public goal-tracking
