Weston Community Engagement Coordinator VISTA
 
 
 
This VISTA project is focused on expanding the capacity of the City of Weston, West Virginia’s Parks and Recreation Department. This project is aimed at improving overall wellbeing of residents in Weston through an increased emphasis on physical and mental wellbeing, expanded recreational and leisure-time activities, and increased community programming that promotes Weston as a place residents want to live and feel a sense of pride. This project will both address harmful impacts of poverty while creating the conditions to reduce poverty in current and future generations. The VISTA will report to the City of Weston’s AmeriCorps Program Director who also leads Parks and Recreation. The member will play an integral role in expanding the City’s capacity for recreational and leisure-time activities for residents. They will engage the community in decisions about programming development, support strategic partnership development, create systems for support and scaling activities, and fundraising. It is important for the City to be able to offer free programming and scholarships for programming because poverty too often serves as a barrier to participation in activities that promote health. The member will have the chance to be deeply involved in expanding community support and enthusiasm for recreation activities in a state that regularly lists near the bottom in health outcomes. This placement will be an especially good site for someone who loves sports, outdoor activities, and generating enthusiasm for movement and play. The site is looking for someone who is creative, well-organized, confident speaking with community members and partners, self-motived, and enthusiastic about health and wellbeing.

Member Duties : In this role, the member will be responsible for a variety of capacity building activities. These include but are not limited to: - Developing a well-researched list of options for where programming can be held in the community. - Creating processes and systems to improve efficiency of Parks and Recreation programming - Designing assessment tools to collect feedback from community members about their experience at recreational programs to influence future programming - Collaborating with Parks and Recreation Director with developing strategic partnerships that inform programming. - Building relationships within the community to improve flow of feedback - Researching, tracking, and supporting completion of grant applications - Identifying opportunities to solicit in-kind contributions and sponsorships of equipment, space, or other needs for recreational programming
