EmpowerEd Conecuh AmeriCorps

EmpowerEd Conecuh AmeriCorps is a transformative initiative by Reid State Technical College, aimed at supporting educational advancement in Conecuh County, Alabama. The program engages 25 AmeriCorps members in academic mentoring, coaching, summer learning, and family involvement activities to strengthen K-12 success and post-secondary readiness. Through one-on-one and group mentoring, members provide guidance that fosters resilience, self-management, and interpersonal skills, helping students prepare for higher education or career pathways. In Conecuh County, significant educational and economic disparities highlight the need for targeted interventions. Despite a high school graduation rate of 92%, only 68% of students are deemed college or career-ready. Additionally, economic barriers such as a high poverty rate and low median household income further restrict educational access. EmpowerEd Conecuh AmeriCorps addresses these gaps through evidence-based strategies, including summer learning to prevent learning loss, coaching to assist with college preparation, and workshops to engage families in creating supportive learning environments. The project aims to achieve meaningful outcomes: 40 students will report improved college and career readiness, 35 students are expected to enroll in post-secondary education, and 25 will complete a degree or technical training. EmpowerEd Conecuh AmeriCorps aligns with AmeriCorps and the Governor’s Office of Volunteer Services’ funding priorities, including enhancing K-12 educational outcomes and fostering economic opportunities in rural communities. By promoting educational equity, the program aspires to elevate Conecuh County’s overall educational attainment and economic potential.
