*MCVP – Land to Hand Food Pantry VISTA
 
 
 
The goal of this VISTA project is to create a more food-secure community in Flathead County by developing a new food pantry and increasing the capacity of Land to Hand’s food access programs. Currently 12.4% of Montanans live below the poverty line and 1 in 6 children live in a food insecure home. The biggest factor leading to food insecurity is affordable housing. Montana is one of the least affordable states in the country for homeownership. Between 2018 and 2023, the median home sales price in Montana increased by 89.6%, from $266,473 to $505,419. Montanans’ incomes didn’t increase by 89% to meet this new normal. The lack of stable and affordable housing is one of the biggest issues that is causing food insecurity in Montana and Flathead County. This VISTA project will move children, families and seniors out of poverty by developing an efficient food pantry that meets the increasing need in our communities for access to healthy, nutritious food resulting in children with better learning outcomes, families with less worry about meeting their nutritional needs, and seniors who have access to fruits and vegetables

Member Duties : The VISTA will develop evaluation plans to assess Land to Hand’s various food access programs. The VISTA will create policies and procedures to guide the development of a new Land to Hand food pantry. The VISTA will recruit and train volunteers to oversee the new food pantry. The VISTA will evaluate the health knowledge of participants in Land to Hand’s food access and education programs.
