The Community Unity Center (CUC) is a new initiative arising from a 3-year vision of members of Maplewood United Methodist Church (MUMC) and the local community. The mission of MUMC is to celebrate and nurture the unique gifts of individuals and the community by creating a dynamic environment that inspires connection, learning, and empowerment. The MUMC vision is a community whose body, mind, heart, and spirit are nourished. We should emphasize that the CUC itself does not have any mission or goal to proselytize program recipients or to persuade them toward any religious belief. The goal of the Community Unity VISTA project is to create a sustainable fundraising approach, strategize about how to promote increased community awareness through social media, and provide examples for programming that might be feasible.

Member Duties : Maplewood United Methodist Church (MUMC), in partnership with the Community Unity Center, operates the LifeWise STL Summer Learning Program serving 20 students ages 6–12 and their families in the Maplewood-Richmond Heights area, where 32% of children qualify for free school lunches. Approximately 85% of participants are families of color who receive free/reduced lunch or participate in Meals on Wheels programming. Summer Associate VISTAs will support the program by serving in one of two roles: Freedom School Peer Counselor Intern or Freedom School After Care Coordinator. Together, these four VISTAs will deliver 6 weeks of literacy enrichment and structured learning activities, aftercare support, combat food insecurity by providing daily meals, and build a sustainable network of community partners to support working families and reduce generational poverty.
