Systems Change VISTA

The Community Opportunity Alliance is a national nonprofit that builds the community development field. We are committed to creating conditions where residents can shape the destiny of their neighborhoods, securing their long-term prosperity. The Alliance strengthens the field of 6,000+ local community development organizations working to develop affordable housing and commercial space, support small business development, and provide social services. The VISTA will help us provide more useful and engaging communications to practitioners in several ways: improving our social media presence, which has not gotten significant focus to date; using open rates, click-through rates and other metrics to evaluate engagement in our mass emails, website, and social media; organizing meetings with stakeholders to get feedback on content and format; segmenting our database to target relevant information to specific audiences. By communicating better with community developers, we can provide them with better access to funding and other resources. Our research has found that social media is particularly important in reaching smaller organizations with fewer resources, so that will be a particular focus. In October 2025, we will co-host People & Places Conference, a peer-learning event for 500+ community developers nationwide. The VISTA will help develop a coordinated way to publicize the conference with our 3 cohosts. The VISTA will use stakeholder input, metrics, and our improved database to help us publicize the conference and all of our other convenings more effectively. The VISTA will improve administrative processes for our Community Development Voice initiative, which amplifies local practitioners' insights on how current events affect their work and their communities. The VISTA will refine our processes for conducting town hall meetings and polls, segmenting the media list, distributing press releases, and recruiting and orienting the next cohort more efficiently.
