Glassroots Education Coordinator 2024-2025

Glassroots is reimagining recycling by diverting waste from our landfills, turning it into a resource for our community, combating environmental racism, and increasing environmental education and access to recycling. Our four goals are: 1. To divert “waste” from landfills by hosting free drop-off glass recycling for all Louisiana residents three days a week. Glassroots’ partner organization, Glass Half Full, also coordinates residential and commercial glass pick-ups. Together, Glassroots and Glass Half Full divert upwards of 100,000 pounds of glass every month from thousands of recyclers. 2. To convert that glass into a resource that benefits the community that recycles it. Once the glass reaches the warehouse, Glassroots’ partner organization, Glass Half Full, crushes glass into fine sand or gravel which can be utilized to solve a host of challenges, from disaster relief sandbags to research for coastal restoration, to green construction, and even Mardi Gras beads. Glassroots then distributes resources to the community. 3. Combating environmental racism head-on. Glassroots does this by decreasing landfill waste, educating residents on the importance of recycling, increasing access to recycling, and activating volunteers to meet community needs before and after climate change-related natural disasters. 4. To increase access to environmental education. Glassroots partners with community organizations and schools to promote recycling and environmental education for young people and adults. In 2021, Glassroots piloted a curriculum for K12 students to learn about the benefits of recycling. In 2022, the partnership expanded to multiple schools across New Orleans. In 2023 and 2024, Glassroots has developed new environmental education curricula with an emphasis on service-learning experiences for K-12 and college students.
