Our program enables members to be a part of a positive solution for our community while providing them with not only training and skills for their future but also a fun, unique, safe work environment. With this experience, ongoing training and benefits, as well as many unique historical and cultural learning opportunities, many AmeriCorps members choose to reapply after completion of their commitment. AmeriCorps members will perform projects in environmental stewardship and outdoor recreation in Lincoln and Otero County. Crews will complete projects in partnership with National Forest, Bureau of Land Management, Village of Ruidoso, Mescalero Apache Tribe and others. Projects include trail design, construction and restoration, forest monitoring, disaster relief, watershed restoration and community improvement projects. Lincoln County (LC) is located in Eastern New Mexico. It has a population of 20,105 people with 48% in cities and 52% in rural areas; this is spread out over 4,831 square miles and encompasses 10 towns and villages (Capitan, Carrizozo, Corona, Glencoe, Hondo, Nogal, Ruidoso, Ruidoso Downs, San Patricio and Tinnie). Our communities range from vast ranch lands at an elevation of 4,000 feet to alpine mountain ranges of 11,500 feet in elevation. Ruidoso is the main populated Village and has recently been hit hard with wildfires that have devastated our community and has taken valuable resources, homes and tourism. Our community's topography is very diverse and passes through 5 different biomes from the Chihuahua Desert to the Sub-Alpine Forest. The city populations are concentrated in and around the Sub-Alpine Forest. We are a program that enables AmeriCorps members to be a part of a solution for our community and also provide crucial training, skills and certificates to help with future adventures that the AmeriCorps member desire.

Member Duties : Member Duties : As a member of New Mexico’s premier trail builders, you will build/reroute trails, mitigate and rebuild damage from the devasting wildfires, gather GPS information on trail data, create trail maps, recover recreation areas, remove fire damaged debris, assist in any natural disasters that affect our local area, build new hiking shelters and kiosks, replace signage, build erosion control devices, plant and remove vegetation and monitor forest health. Members will complete forest monitoring, stand examinations, be a crucial component in our recovering projects and in our program and participate in wilderness camping projects. Restore and help maintain historical sites throughout Fort Stanton and Lincoln. Become PACK Certified, HAM Radio Certified, Saw 212 Certified, ICS 100, 200 and 700 Certified, participant in the Emergency Services Council Annual Preparedness event and Leave No Trace certified. Have the opportunity to build trails with a Mini Excavtor and be trained.
