Alaska Songbird Institute Communications and Outreach Develo

The Alaska Songbird Institute (ASI) is small community nonprofit based in Fairbanks, Alaska. Our mission is to conserve Alaska’s boreal birds through education and research. We use a blended research and education model whereby our data are collected by students and community volunteers in partnership with our scientists. We operate two long-term avian research projects at Creamer’s Refuge in Fairbanks. The Creamer’s Field Migration Station (CFMS) is a seasonal bird banding station that has been in operation on the refuge during spring and fall migration since 1992. Each season, over 1,000 birds are safely captured in mist nets, banded, and released. Our data provide information essential to building successful conservation plans for bird populations in Alaska’s boreal forest. Along with the birds, CFMS is visited by thousands of people each year including approximately 80 K-12 classes and hundreds of independent visitors. Our research is supported by over 40 community volunteers of all ages. Our Tree Swallow Nesting Ecology Study follows the timing and success of cavity-nesting birds at Creamer’s Refuge and on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus each summer. This project works in conjunction with our youth mentoring and high school internship programs. These programs provide a unique opportunity for students ages 10-18 to explore research, wildlife, and conservation-related career paths through hands-on work with wild birds. Together these students volunteer approximately 1,000 hours to monitoring 80+ nest boxes and banding ~400 adult and nestling birds each summer. ASI’s also offers education and outreach programs throughout the year including community events, seminars, art shows, and fundraisers. All of our efforts aim to increase awareness and support for the conservation of Alaska’s birds and their habitats.

Member Duties : The Alaska Songbird Institute has a well-established foundation of core research, unique science education programs, and community support. However, there is great potential to engage new audiences, increase equity and access to our programming, and to broaden our reach within the Fairbanks community and beyond. The ASI Communications and Outreach Development Coordinator will help us envision this work by developing an organizational Communication and Outreach Plan. This will include strategies to retain and grow our membership and volunteer base, as well as new ways to increase the breadth of our outreach. They will also create a new Education & Outreach Advisory Committee that will support them in efforts to increase equity and access to ASI’s science education programming and to make ASI’s research more accessible to general audiences.
