FSWCD Program Coordinator VISTA

The Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District (FSWCD) is combating poverty by offering a community farm program designed to increase local food production and food security by providing community agriculture education through the Alternative Fairbanks Farm Educational and Cooperative Training Program (AFFECT), a USDA funded project which includes a Farmer Training program to help folks who want to learn how to develop and run their own farm. This position will work in partnership with FSWCD staff and its collaborators to expand equity and access through our different food security projects. The VISTA will facilitate the development of the AFFECT Community Farm, which will include a community food kitchen and food storage facility that will offer community agriculture education workshops. The VISTA will evaluate and continue development of our hydroponics education program, to provide our community and rural native communities with the knowledge of how to grow food year-round to both increase food security and healthy nutritious local food availability. The VISTA volunteer will evaluate and continue development of existing community gardens and hydroponic gardens throughout Fairbanks, with the goal of increasing community involvement with sustainable gardening and farm projects.
