Credible Messenger Corps

The Credible Messenger Corps (Credible Messenger Mentoring Movement's AmeriCorps program) will have 50 AmeriCorps members who will mentor, support, and advance justice-involved youth in New York, NY; Columbus, OH; Atlanta, GA; New Orleans, LA; and San Diego, CA. At the end of the first year, the AmeriCorps members (Credible Messenger Mentors) will be responsible for serving 500 justice-involved youth overall; 300 of the youth will be served through one-on-one transformative mentoring, with at least 60% of those increasing pro-social attributes, academic performance, job readiness, and recidivism avoidance, and 200 will be served through community outreach activities. The Credible Messenger Mentors and justice-involved youth will improve the capacity of their communities, turning back the impacts of poverty and marginalization by developing career pathways for themselves, assuming leadership roles, and improving public safety. The AmeriCorps investment will be matched with $1,089,800 (100%) in private funding. A key component of such an investment will focus on the recruitment, development, and empowerment of Credible Messengers Mentors (AmeriCorps members) -- community-rooted natural leaders who have successfully navigated their own prior involvement in the justice system and share similar life experiences with young people and families that they serve.
