Co-op Resource Development Coordinator

Mi Casa is a Latino-led affordable housing nonprofit supporting D.C. residents primarily at extremely low-income levels, the majority of whom identify as immigrants, Latino, or Black. We develop and preserve existing small-scale neighborhood rental and cooperative housing and provide training and technical assistance to strengthen diverse communities. This project expands our capacity to fill that gap by creating a road map or set of permanent resources that DC residents can use to successfully establish and manage affordable co-ops and preserve their affordable housing over the long-term. The development of affordable housing co-ops serve as an important bulwark against housing displacement that low-income tenants often face when their buildings are sold; these co-ops make it possible for tenants to stay in housing that is affordable to them as their neighborhood grows and develops around them. The development of a Co-op Development manual will strengthen the ability of DC residents who choose to exercise their tenant rights to form an affordable housing co-op, helping them to access their power, determine their housing future, and preserve their right to stay in the city they call home.

Member Duties : The VISTA will assess current organizational resources used for co-op development and identify gaps in resources. They will also plan and implement convening sessions with relevant stakeholders such as co-op developers, current co-op members, and funders to facilitate the development of formal partnerships that strengthen the support ecosystem for DC residents who wish to develop affordable co-op housing by exercising their TOPA rights. Using notes from community convenings, the VISTA will organize new and existing materials into a Co-op Development manual that can serve as a resource guide for any DC residents looking for support in exercising their TOPA rights to develop an affordable housing co-op to be distributed widely to all relevant stakeholders.
