RIDOC Healthcare Services VISTA - RI Health & Justice Team

The Rhode Island Department of Corrections (RIDOC) Healthcare Services cares for all incarcerated individuals in the state. Our purpose is to ensure all incarcerated individuals at RIDOC who are seeking medical care are treated with dignity and provided with high-quality health care. In pursuit of this mission, RIDOC works to be a model system for other facilities around the nation to replicate. The RIDOC has been the first state to implement a comprehensive Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT) program which has demonstrated enormous success. During the pandemic, we were one of the first to offer the Covid-19 vaccine to all incarcerated individuals and provide innovative treatments including monoclonal antibody therapy. We have successfully partnered with community organizations to help ensure continuity of care when our patients re-enter the community. The RIDOC Healthcare Services team is continually working to provide enhanced services for our patients. The RIDOC Healthcare Services VISTA member will help support our projects, such as executing public health programming and education, performing a health needs assessment of incarcerated individuals, assessing novel projects (e.g., telehealth expansion amongst the RIDOC), and assisting identified quality improvement activities. This position will work with RIDOC staff, healthcare providers, and incarcerated individuals to accomplish tasks and responsibilities directly related to enhancing the public health infrastructure across RIDOC facilities. This position offers flexibility in allowing a member to identify projects of interest and elevate the voices and perspectives of individuals with lived experience of incarceration.
